Jerusalem is the destination every pilgrim carries in the heart long before arriving. Sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims, its walled Old City folds three faiths and three thousand years into a few square kilometres of stone, prayer and living history.
Why it matters
No place on earth holds deeper meaning for the Christian faith. Within the Old City walls, tradition places the final steps of Jesus, from His condemnation along the Via Dolorosa to His crucifixion, burial and resurrection at the site now enclosed by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. For centuries this has been the goal of pilgrimage, the moment when the Gospel story becomes ground you can stand on.
Jerusalem is equally central to Judaism: the Western Wall is the last remnant of the Second Temple compound and Judaism's most revered place of prayer. For Muslims, the same elevated platform holds the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, among the holiest sites in Islam. To walk Jerusalem is to move through the shared heritage of half the world, with reverence owed at every threshold, and a knowledgeable guide turns narrow lanes and quiet chapels into one moving story.

Good to know. Modest dress is required at all holy sites, with covered shoulders and knees. The Old City is walked on foot over uneven stone and steps, so comfortable shoes matter. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather.
